Free Crochet Back to School Pencil Bag & Scarves Pattern©

Free Crochet Back to School Pencil Bag & Scarves Pattern©
By Connie Hughes Designs©

Hard to believe summer is almost over...now all the stores have
the back to school supplies out and on display...

These scarves are very easy to make and can be made in any length or width with some quick adjustments. These are perfect for younger children between the ages of 4 to 7.
If you want to make it for a bigger kid or teen make it longer and/or skinnier.

This is a big post with a lot of instructions & photo's. So go
all the way down to make sure you see everything!
Character Scarves Inspired by Monsters Inc. Mike & Sully one on each pocket!

Inspired by Alice in Wonderland!
This is my Minion Inspired School Bus Pencil Bag!
You always have to have a #2 Pencil so here's
the matching Scarf!
 Colored Pencil Scarf!
I know the first day back is the hardest...but the day
will come to an end...make a little one's 1st day
a little more fun by making these!

There is a list of materials above each pattern.

Hooks Used in Patter:
I 5.5mm
J 6.0mm
C 2.75mm
F 3.75mm
4.5.
Pencil Scarf Measures 43" Long/ 5½" Wide

Red Heart Yarns Used for the Pencil Scarf: If using Red Heart Yarns use Red Heart with Love Yarn especially for the yellow part of the scarf... it's just a much softer yarn.
Brown
Buff
Yellow
Light Grey
Light Raspberry
Quick Note:

For the beginning of this scarf you will ch1 & turn...it's tiresome to have to type that out for each row...so just know you will "ch1 & turn" at the end of each row until instructed...you will then change to Yellow and ch2 & turn.

To make the Color Pencil Scarf: with H 5.0 Hook

Row 89. 1hdc in 8sts, turn & ch10.
Row 90. 1hdc in the 3rd st from hook and 1hdc in 7sts, ch2 & turn.
Row 91. 1hdc in 8sts, ch2 & turn.
Rows 92-104. repeat row 91
Sew the 2 pieces together, making sure the openings are facing each other like in the photo below.

To make the Character Scarves
To make the Cheshire Cat/Monsters Inc. Scarves: with Pale Plum & Petal Pink/Spring Green & Turquoise & I Hook 5.5mm
Both of these scarves measure 45" in length
Ch152
Row 1. 1hdc in the 3rd st from the hook, ch2 & turn-150sts.
Row 2. repeat row 1, change to 2nd color
Repeat rows 1 & 2, changing colors after every 2 rows
You should have a total of 12 rows in all.

To make the Pockets for Cheshire Cat Scarf: with Petal Pink & I Hook (make 2)
Ch18
Row 1. 1hdc in the 3rd st from the hook, 1hdc in next 15sts, ch2 & turn-16sts.
Rows 2-11. repeat row 1
Change to Pale Plum
Row 12. 1sc in each st across and FO.
Don't sew the pockets on yet until you attach the tassels.

To make the Cheshire Cat Applique: with Pale Plum & F Hook
Ch11
Row 1. 1sc in 9sts, 3sc in the last st, working on the other side of ch11, 1sc in 9, 2sc in the last st.
Row 2. 2sc in 1, 2hdc in 8sts, 2sc in 2, turn, skip the first st.
Row 3. 1sc in 3, 1hdc in 16sts, 1sc in 3, turn, skip the first st.
Row 4. 1sc in 3, 1hdc in 2, 2hdc, 1hdc in 2, 2hdc, 1hdc in 2, 2hdc, 1hdc in 2, 2hdc, 1sc in 3sts, 1sl st and FO.
Attach the darker Purple like in the photo below with a sl st, ch1.
(I used Purple by Loops & Threads from Michaels Craft Store).
Row 5. 1sc in the BLO in 18sts, ch1 & turn.

Row 6. 1sc in each st, ch1 & turn.
Row 7. wk 1sc in 12sts, ch1 & turn.

Row 9. dec1sc, 1sc in 6, dec1sc, ch1 & turn.
Row 10. dec1sc 4x and FO.

To make the Teeth: with White Yarn & C Hook
*Ch2, 1hdc in the 2nd ch from hook, wk 1sl st in the same st as the hdc is in*, repeat until you have 10 teeth and FO.
Sew the teeth onto the light plum piece, add whiskers.

To make the Ears for the Cheshire Cat: with Purple & C Hook (make 2 for each applique)
Ch5
Row 1. 1sc in 4sts, ch1 & turn.
Rows 2-4. repeat row 1
Row 5. dec1sc 2x, ch1 & turn.
Row 6. dec1sc and FO.
Sew each ear to the back of the applique. When you have everything sewed on and in place, sew the applique to the pocket.
I used small yellow buttons for the cat's eyes and tiny black one's for the pupil.
The nose is cut out of felt and glued on.

To make the Tassels for the 2 Character Scarves
Make 6 or 7 tassels for each side of the scarf.
I cut 3 12" strands in each color of yarn

I put them together and tied a strand right in the middle.

Cut another piece of yarn and tie it around the 6 strands like in photo below.

To make the Monsters Inc: with Spring Green & Turquoise & I Hook
When I made the Monster scarf I accidentally added an extra row. So that's why it has 7 tassels instead of 6.

To make Sully's facial features, I used blue, white, purple and
light grey felt.

To make the Sully Applique: with Turquoise Yarn & F Hook
Ch17
Row 1. 1sc in 16sts, ch1 & turn.
Rows 2-5. repeat row 1
Row 6. dec1sc, 1sc in 12sts, dec1sc, ch1 & turn.
Row 7. 1sc in 14sts, ch1 & turn.

Row 12. 2sc, 1sc in 10sts, 2sc, ch1 & turn.
Row 13. 1sc in 14sts, ch1 & turn.
Row 14. 1sc in 2, 1hdc in 10sts, 1sc 2, ch1 & turn.
Row 15. dec1sc, 1hdc in 10, dec1sc, ch1, do not turn.
Row 16. wk 1sc in each st around, when going around the top of the head
dec1sc on each side and FO.
Sully's eyes, eye brows, nose, teeth and horns are felt that I cut out and hot glued into place. Once everything was glued onto the face I sewed the applique to the pocket.

To make the Mike Applique: with Black Yarn & F Hook
Ch3 This is crocheted in the round.
Row 1. wk 6hdc in the last ch st, join with a sl st to the first hdc st, ch2.
Change to Glowworm
Row 2. 2hdc in each st around, join & ch2.
Change to White
Row 3. wk 2hdc, 1hdc in the next st, join & ch2.
Change to Spring Green
Row 4. wk 2hdc, 1hdc in the next 2sts, join & ch2.
Row 5. wk 2hdc, 1hdc in the next 3sts, join and FO.

To make Mike's Eyebrow: with Spring Green & F Hook
Ch11
1sc in 2, 1hdc in 2, 1dc in 2, 1hdc in 2, 1sc in 2 FO.
I used a tapestry needle and black yarn to make his smile. I cut his 2 teeth out of felt and glued them on.

Red Heart Yarns used to make the Pencil Bag:
Yellow
Black
White
Light Grey
Red
Other materials used to make the Pencil Bag:

Paint/Sm. Paint Brush (on the felt paint the eyes white, brown and then with a tooth pick make a black dot)

Ch33
Row 1. 1sc in 32sts, ch1 & turn.
Rows 2-20. repeat row 1

Row 36. dec1sc, 1sc in 20, dec1sc, ch1 & turn.
Row 37. dec1sc, 1sc in 18, dec1sc & FO.
When you have both panels done put them together and wk 1sc all the way around. Leaving the top part opened.

Now turn the bag around to back side. Reattach yarn to the closing flap, wk 1sc all the way around and FO.

To make the Wheels: with Light Grey/Black & 4.5 Hook
Ch2
Row 1. 6sc in the 2nd st from the hook.
Change to Black
Row 2. 2sc in each st around-12sts.
Row 3. 1sc, 2sc in the next st-18sts.
Row 4. 1sc in 2, 2sc in the next st and FO-24sts.
Now with only black repeat rows 1-4, put the 2 pieces together and wk 1sc all the way around and FO.

Finishes touches for the pencil bag:
I hot glued the Velcro on but sewing might be better.

I love making patterns and when I do, I try very hard to make sure its worth the money when I do charge for them...I try to provide you with good and easy projects and I try like the dickens to give you as much as I can in each pattern...I value my costumers and I feel like some of you are more like friends...so I hope you like and enjoy Bailey the Elephant!
The Molly Monkey & the Baby Giraffe pictured above are free patterns on my blog.

This would make a wonderful birthday gift and can easily be made for a boy as well just change the color to a light blue! This little pink elephant can be made very quickly in just a few hours! When finished the Little Elephant measures 7" and the Backpack Bag measures about 12"
When finished Bailey the Elephant measures 11"
